# Why We Built Gately: Solving the Database Setup Problem for Creators

By kayode•September 15, 2025•5 mins

The idea for Gately was born out of a problem I kept watching creators hit — over and over — while building on Framer.

Before Gately, I built a plugin called [Framergenie](https://www.framergenie.com/), which helped creators extend their Framer sites with dynamic features. The vision was exciting. But there was one constant hurdle that stopped people in their tracks: **database setup**.

## The Wall Every Creator Hit

Framer is exceptional at what it does — beautiful, fast, design-first websites. But the moment a creator wanted to add anything dynamic — user accounts, memberships, gated content, forms that actually store data — they ran into a wall.

That wall was the backend.

Setting up a database meant choosing between Supabase, Firebase, PlanetScale, or a dozen other options. Then configuring authentication. Then writing API routes. Then deploying a server. Then managing environment variables, CORS headers, JWT tokens, and session management.

None of that is what a creator signed up for. They wanted to build a membership site, not become a backend engineer.

## What I Kept Hearing

I remember the conversations clearly. Creators stuck on the same problems:

- "I just want login and signup on my Framer site — why is this so hard?"
- "I set up Supabase but I don't know how to connect it to my frontend."
- "I want to gate some content for paid members but I have no idea where to start."
- "I just want a form that stores submissions — do I really need a whole backend for that?"

The frustration was real. What should have been a 10-minute task was turning into days of research, configuration, and debugging.

## The Insight

The insight that led to Gately was simple: **the database shouldn't be the creator's problem**.

Every creator building a membership site, a course platform, or a gated community needs the same core infrastructure — user authentication, a member database, subscription billing, form storage, email sending. The underlying technology is the same. Only the branding and content differ.

So why is every creator rebuilding this from scratch?

The answer was: they shouldn't have to. That infrastructure should be pre-built, pre-configured, and ready to connect — so creators can focus on what they actually do: building great products and growing their audience.

## What Gately Does Differently

Gately removes the backend burden entirely. There's no database to configure, no server to deploy, no authentication system to build. You create a project in the Gately dashboard, install the plugin or SDK, and your site is connected to a complete membership infrastructure in minutes.

| Without Gately | With Gately |
| ------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------- |
| Set up Supabase / Firebase | Create a project in the dashboard |
| Configure authentication | Install the Framer plugin |
| Write API routes | Drag login/signup components onto canvas |
| Deploy a server | Publish your site |
| Manage JWT tokens | Done |

The Gately Framer Plugin handles the SDK injection automatically. One click in the Installation tab adds the Gately Client SDK to your Framer project's custom code — connecting your entire site to your Gately project without touching a line of code.

## The Bigger Picture

Framergenie showed me the pain points. Gately became the solution. But the mission grew beyond just Framer.

Gately is now a complete membership platform — authentication, payments, content protection, email campaigns, helpdesk, help center, forms, workflows, task management, and more. All in one place. All without a backend.

Whether you're a solo creator building a course platform, a SaaS founder adding subscription billing, or an agency building client portals — Gately handles the infrastructure so you can focus on building.

## What's Next

We're still early. The platform is expanding rapidly — new features ship every week. But the core mission hasn't changed since day one: **make it effortless to build membership-powered products without managing infrastructure**.

If you've ever hit the database setup wall, Gately was built for you.
